rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH YouTube MUSICIANS - VUDOO SOUL

Hey guys, guess what? Third time's the charm, and with me is NY-based singer Vudoo Soul, enjoy!

Vudoo Vu (aka Vudoo Soul, born August 12) is a NYC-based singer/songwriter, who most notably gained attention for winning Kollaboration NY 2005, as well as taking part in Kollaboration NY 2009. A MIT/Berklee grad, Vudoo says that his passion for music developed while in university, and ultimately he decided to pursue that further. He spent sometime answering my questions, and I hope you enjoy this interview!

How long have you been doing music for? Are you doing it professionally or independently?
I started playing piano around '03, '04, trying to write songs by mashing on keys until it didn't sound bad. When I started 'professionally' in '05, I really only knew how to play 2 songs and sing at the same time. Haha, you gotta start somewhere!

What style of music do you generally play?
I sing mostly in the vein of R&B, sometimes it veers towards pop, sometimes more soul/singer-songwriter vibe.

How did you first get involved in music?
I was singing in a college acappella group called the MIT Logarhythms, and discovered that music was just a whole lot more fulfilling to do than my engineering work. After an Alicia Keys concert I went to, it just hit me that music was what I wanted to do with my life.

Who/what made you decide to starting YouTubing your musical talent?
I haven't used YouTube as much as a lot of other people yet, doing covers and such, but I definitely always used it to post live performances of my shows when I was starting.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson, both in their own ways, had huuuuge influences on me growing up. It was their honest message and passion in their music that taught me a lot. I continue to learn from them even now.

How does it feel to be getting all this support from people for doing what you do?
It's the best feeling in the world!!! I'm doing what my heart desires, and really, I just wanna see more people doing that too, whatever that may be important for them.

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
I think I would pretty much die if I got the chance to collaborate somehow with Alicia Keys.

What has been your most popular cover on YouTube? Your most popular original song on YouTube?
Most popular cover hmm... not really sure about that one! People seem to enjoy my Michael Jackson covers best! Most popular original seems to either "Lazy" or "Baby Be Mine", which is odd to me, cuz I hardly ever perform that song!

How was your experience playing at Kollaboration NY this year?
I thought it was a blast, especially since winning Kollaboration NY in '05 was what gave me one of my first big starts as an artist!! I owe Kollaboration so much and will love & support'em to the end for giving people like me a platform to jumpstart our music careers.

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
Right this minute, I'm listening to Muse & My Chemical Romance. I eat up a lot of live Stevie performances and John Mayer stuff. Tupac and T.I. sometimes for weeks on end. I just love music that tells a story, whether it's rock, R&B, country, hip-hop, whatever.

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
One place? That place is my past. It's painful, complicated, but beautiful... It's always a great starting point for me to ignite songwriting inspiration.

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
My brother-for-life, Taiyo Na. He's an acoustic hip-hop/soul artist born and raised in New York. He and I really got to know each other as part of a musical where I played the lead and he played the best friend to that character. In time, he would become my best friend in real life too. He's disciplined, passionate & so insightful. We learn from each other, this music game as an Asian American ain't easy!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not playing music?
My life is made of intensely awesome music-playing, eating, partying, and sleeping. I can usually only handle 3 most of the time haha.

What do you hope to accomplish while being involved in music?
Besides world domination? With all the traveling and charity work that can come hand in hand with music, I would love to make a real impact in bringing more music & arts into schools. I didn't have that much growing up, I think it's a waste of human potential to not give people that opportunity more readily, early & frequently.

Do you have any final words for the readers?
Life's short. But it'll seem long, lost & meaningless if you don't do something that's personal to you. Do what you love, now.

There you have it folks, thanks to Vudoo for the interview. And until next time, peace out!

J~

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH MONDAY MICHIRU

Yes, you guessed it! Triple threat for November 25th, with my next guest, Japanese-American singer Monday Michiru!

Monday Michiru (born August 19, 1963 in Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese-American actress and singer/songwriter. Born into a very musical family, she discovered her passion for music at a young age, and also delved into dance as well as acting and soon after, her career shot off, having won several awards for her lead role in the movie "Hikaru Onna", and then soon after set her sights on her music career with the release of her debut album "Mangetsu". Having worked with the likes of Basement Jaxx, m-flo, Mondo Grosso and others, Monday has become quite the accomplished musician, while juggling family life and travelling between the US and Japan now and then. Having just returned from Japan for m-flo's 10th anniversary concert, Monday spared some time to answer some of my questions!

How long have you been doing music professionally for?
My first paid job was when I was 22, but I've been recording since age 13.

What style of music do you generally play, and which musicians provide inspiration for your sound?
My style is really a crossover and conglomeration of various stylistically, culturally and generationally, all sonics that I have been inspired by; but in a sense, it is my own soul. Many musicians provide inspiration, and it's hard to list just a few.

Besides being an accomplished jazz singer in the US, you have also done quite a bit of work in Japan. One of your most famous works was the track you did with hip-hop duo/producers m-flo - the song "A.D.D.P." Tell me about that experience.
Firstly, I wouldn't really refer to myself as a "jazz singer" -- what I do is not, in my eyes, jazz, being a daughter of jazz musician parents and the wife of one; however, I am inspired deeply by jazz and there are no doubt inflections. And truth be told, I am quite underground here in the U.S., whereas Japan was where my musical career took hold and people generally think of me as being part of a Japanese collective that came out in the '90s. The song you mention, A.D.D.P. by m-flo, was a lot of fun to do. In this day and age, one can do things over the internet, sending sound files, and such was the case with this track where they initially sent me the back track from Japan to NY where I live with a chorus melody & lyrics already written, and I contributed by writing the A & B melodies & lyrics, which Verbal then touched up by adding some Japanese here and there. I recorded the vocals in NY which we sent via internet, and they finished up the track and mixed in Japan. As you know, they recently commemorated their 10th anniversary with a big 2 day concert in Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo, which I was a part of. A lot of fun. And I have to mention that they are the sweetest, most humble duo you've ever met -- they work hard, they're talented, a great pleasure.

Can fans expect new material from you anytime soon?
I am currently working on a remix to my last solo album, "Nexus," which I hope to have out by Spring of next year. I'm also talking with a label in Japan about doing an acoustic, more jazzy album, which I'll start working on come January 2010, as well as probably putting together a polar opposite project on my own.

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
Meshell Ndegeocello comes to mind first -- I simply love and respect EVERYTHING she has done musically and conceptually.

Are you doing any projects and/or campaigning for anything right now aside from your music career?
Not really. My greatest project in life is my son. As well as my marriage with a very complex man, and our equally complex dog :-) That alone takes up plenty of my time and energy.

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
You'd be shocked to know -- I don't own an iPod. Last person in the 21st Century not to own one probably. Even my 9 year old has one (LOL!). And truth be told, I rarely listen to music at home. It takes away from my thinking space and ability to dream and hear my own melodies and rhythms. There's so much sonic stuff out there in our daily lives, from when we're in the car, supermarket, shops, TV, even out on the streets, that silence is a luxury.

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music, apart from the studio?
Out on the road. I see, hear, feel and experience different stimulations that inspire me to think in a different way to write. People inspire me.

You’ve been active as a professional musician for almost 2 decades, give or take. How does it feel so far? Do you feel you have more to accomplish? Is there anything you still want to do, both in your music career and outside of it?
I still feel like I'm a baby in music. I don't know enough, I'm still not good enough, still haven't written THE song that would make me feel like I have nothing more to give. Aside from music, I have a great love and passion for FOOD and wine. I'd love to do something that would combine my two passions.

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
I can't say there's ONE closest musician friend. My husband, as mentioned previously, is a jazz musician, a very brilliant trumpeter as well as composer and arranger. The fact I married him speaks volumes of my deep respect for his musical ability. But there are so many who have been a part of my musical life, and some who continue to be, who I feel close to and we've communicated in a way that other regular friendships cannot compare. I do have to mention my engineer, Dave Darlington, who I have worked with since the mid 90s and who I consider a wonderful friend, to be a close musician friend as well. All I have met through work.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not recording or touring?
Being a mother, wife and home caretaker, and a MEAN cook!! And a bit of a lush.

To the critical question now. You have been involved in music for some time now, and music tastes and styles are changing quickly in this day and age. Where do you see music in Japan going in the future, in the sense of changing tastes, and will this allow you continued creativity down the road?
I don't believe in trends or musical fads as much more than that, and I have always strove to create on the pure basis of creativity that is a communication between myself, my muse, my Gods, and the universe and those who are in tune with it. So whatever is going on musically on the exterior with the flavors of the month, I hope to create music that will transcend that. As far as music in Japan and where I see it going, it's hard to say; I'm not a fortune teller, and there are always talents and trend setters coming out of the wood work that one didn't anticipate.

Do you feel you’ve contributed to the advancement of music in Japan/US as a jazz/house singer? And is there anything you’d like to see done in this whole genre of music in Japan/US?
I don't know if I've been a contributor to any advancements, but I do like to think I've been a contributor amongst the many wonderful musicians and producers out there who have contributed and inspired all of us. As far as what I'd like to see/hear in the future in either Japan or the U.S., I always wish to hear that new track or tune that hits my in the heart and makes me nod and say, "That's it..."!!

Woohoo, and there you have it! Arigatou to Monday for the interview. And like I said, keep reading and supporting to see more interviews like this, and support artists like Monday. Till next time, saiyounara!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH TAKU TAKAHASHI (m-flo/Ravex)

Hey guys! Thanks for reading, and now, please enjoy, if not my biggest, one of my biggest interviews to date - with the legendary Japanese DJ/producer...Taku Takahashi of m-flo and Ravex!

Taku Takahashi (born March 27, 1974 in Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese DJ and producer, most famously, one half of the powerhouse hip-pop duo m-flo, as well as a member of a 3-man project called 'ravex'. Since the mid 90s, Taku has been heavily involved in the Japanese club/house scene as a rising DJ and now producer and owner of a record label. Apart from his domestic and overseas gigs playing big clubs, Taku also produces remixes and original work for many artists included Sowelu, Crystal Kay, Lady Sovereign, The Ting Tings, and more. And to add on that, he's the DJ behind one of Japan's most successful producing/collaborating hip-pop duos, m-flo. He also is a host of TCY RADIO TOKYO. Without further ado, here is my interview with Taku! (Please note that this interview took place during August but was not completed till November!)

How long have you been doing music professionally for?
Luckily, it is my 11th year. It's also 10yr anniversary for m-flo.

What style of music is your forte, and which musicians provide inspiration for your tracks?
I'd say dance. especially house and electronical stuff. Maybe Drum&Bass Also.

So as a solo artist, you’ve been involved in a number of projects, two that I would like to talk about today. In 2008, you joined a 3-man DJ/producer trio called ravex, which was established to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the avex label. What or who was the mastermind behind this idea to create this group, and what gave inspiration to make the group as it is now?
It's Shinichi Osawa's idea. He invited me to the group and it was my big honor. I always listened to his stuff when I was a college student. Can you imagine being in the same group with someone who you worshiped in college? lol Although nobody mentioned YMO may be our influence, as an icon not the sound...

Will ravex keep making music together in the future?
God only knows. lol We see each other a lot though. Shin's studio is close to my studio and I sometimes bump in to him at Cafes.

Your taste in music is pretty diverse I can imagine; what do you normally play when you’re working (DJing events) and when you’re at home?
I play house/electro mainly. To be more precise I play fidget bassline house.
I also play drum&bass and dubstep. Im really in to Filter House recently.

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
Yes, chaki from THE LOW BROWS. I think its gonna happen.

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
Anywhere. Thats why I like to bring around my laptop.

You’ve played gigs in a lot of other countries, the most recent being South Korea. Is there any particular country you haven’t been to yet that you’d like to do a gig in, and if you and VERBAL were able to come DJ/perform in North America, would you?
Would like to DJ anywhere if people need me. :)

You do a lot of remixes for musicians, both Japanese and foreign. One in particular, your remix of The Ting Ting’s ‘That’s Not My Name’ caught my ear. How did this remix happen in terms of getting hooked up with them and doing the remix, and was there any particular beats or sounds that inspired the remix to be the way that it is?
People send me the offer thru myspace, my agent, etc.....I try to make the remixes playable at my gigs. I think that is the main point for the remix.

Back to m-flo, you’ve rapped for a few different songs, specifically The Rhyme Brokers, VANESSA with Bloodest Saxaphone, and Get On! with Crystal Kay. What made you decide to contribute vocals to those songs, and is there any chance of that happening again anytime soon?
Well, I rap because its fun. I don't have any future plan for that though. lol

Has there been any recent activity with your record label Tachytelic Records, and if not, can we expect any soon?
No, but I think Im starting a new label!

To the critical question now. You’ve been a key player in music for some time now, and music tastes and styles are changing quickly in this day and age. Where do you see music in Japan going in the future, in the sense of changing tastes, and will this allow you continued creativity down the road?
I like your journalist spirit. It is getting more domestic and I don't like it. I think a lot of artists (and even the listeners) craved for something different. But a lot of stuff in the charts are cheezy. Don't get me wrong. Im not saying I dont like pop music. Its just that its getting very typical and a lot of R&B stuff sounds like 10yrs ago and Im pretty much sick and tired of it. Some artists (including us) are trying to change it and trying to bring out something FRESH. God only knows whats gonna happen in the future, but Im not pesimistic about that.

Do you feel you’ve contributed to the advancement of music in Japan as a house/club DJ and a member of two big groups? And is there anything you’d like to see done in this whole genre of music in Japan?
That is my goal, but I strongly believe that it has to get even better. Club scenes are not as big as Europe. I think theres lot more that we can do, but dont know which to start. lol

In addition, Taku gave me some awesome info which I think you guys will like!...

Recently I made more than 10 new remix versions of m-flo tracks for the live and I have been busy making remixes for Lady Sovereign and Calvin Harris. Im more interested in strictly dance oriented materials lately, therefore my challenge is going abroad Japan and releasing my solo. By the way BBC RADIO1 is now playing my remix of Lady Sovereign. I think it is a good start ;)

Suge! (Amazing in Japanese) This was a huge deal to me to do this, and I want to thank Taku and his management for allowing me to do this. And thank you guys, the readers/supporters. Stay tuned for more interviews! :)

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH YouTube MUSICIANS - VICTORIA LEE

Hey folks, check this out. My interview with Boston-based YouTube musician Victoria (Vickii) Lee. Enjoy!

Victoria Lee (born January 26, 1993 in Groton, MA) is a Boston-based YouTube singer/songwriter. A talented young musician, Victoria has expressed her passion for music through her videos on YouTube and also cites some big names as her influences. Sit back and enjoy as she answers some of my questions!

How long have you been doing music for? Are you doing it professionally or independently?
Music is just a hobby for me. I'm doing it independently and hmm, I've always been singing and stuff but I started guitar around 4 years ago. hahah, i like hopped around and switched the questions but its allll goood :)

What style of music do you generally play?
i'm a sucker for anything acoustic and pretty.

How did you first get involved in music?
Hmmm, I have no idea. I always loved to sing and then i though "hey, i'm actually pretty good at this" hahaha.

What made you decide to starting YouTubing your musical talent?
hahaha i don't know the answers to any of these questions. I think it was just really random- I don't know why i decided to put my videos on youtube. When I got a mac, i think the urge became bigger :p

Who are your biggest musical influences?
john mayer definitely. I also love the other big youtubers like aj rafael, kina grannis, andrew garcia, jesse barrera. they are all so awesome and down to earth! thats what i love :)

How does it feel to be getting all this support from people for doing what you do?
It's amazing! Never in a million years would I have thought that I'd get this far! i really love all my supporters!

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
John Mayer♥ i'd probably faint but it's okay. ahahah :)

What has been your most popular cover on YouTube? Your most popular original song on YouTube?
My most popular cover is probably hot n' cold by katy perry. I think it's because the song itself was so popular. hahaha had I known that so many people were going to watch it i would've put more effort into it hahah. My most popular amazing song would have to be "Someone". It was the first one i wrote! :)

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
hahaha I have different music for different occassions! When I need something to fall asleep to i automatically go to John Mayer and just really quiet, soothing acoustic-y stuff. When I'm in my car I blast loud music with really cool beats like angels and airwaves. I love the loud bass hahaha :)

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
Hmmm. It really depends. There's no particular place but when I have really strong emotions whether it be sad or angry or happy is when I can write effective music.

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
Closest musician friend....hmmm, I don't think I really have any hahaha. However, I have met AJ and he is really really sweet. I did a cover of one of his songs and he found me on youtube and we were both in the same area so we got to hang out a few times! Through that I also got to meet Andrew Rhim and Kris Collins and they're awesome as well!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not playing music?
hahahaha the usual. I just hang out with friends and go on the computer a LOT. hahaha.

What do you hope to accomplish while being involved in music?
Hmm, I just really want to put a smile on the faces of my viewers when they watch my videos and listen to my music :)

Do you have any final words for the readers?
you guys are amazing. i love you all ♥ sorry for like bad grammar and spelling hahah :)

Tada! Thanks Vickii for the interview, and thank you once again for reading and supporting! Till next time, I'm O-U-T!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH YouTube MUSICIANS - RAELYNNE ROSALES

Hey folks, I'm back. Awesome time as always, interviewing another musician...please read up, my interview with LA-based singer Raelynne Rosales!

Raelynne Rosales (born August 13, 1990) is a California-based singer/songwriter, and another big name on YouTube. A great singer in her own right already, she also writes her own music and has also been featured as a performer in blogTV's Featured Acoustic Playlist in July this year, which had other big names like Lydia Paek, Gabe Bondoc and the like. She and I spoke for a bit on her take on things, so enjoy!

How long have you been doing music for? Are you doing it professionally or independently?
I started doing music when i was 16 and i was lead singer in two bands..but i started going solo when i was 17, so about 2-3 years now.

What style of music do you generally play?
its really a mixture of stuff..its a bit pop-ish with an inspired jazzy sound, a little bit of soul? haha its hard to describe. it just has a whole lot of feeling.

How did you first get involved in music?
I grew up loving music..i've been dancing since i was 8 years old, but one summer when i was 16, my cousin Justin called me while i was eating hot wings and asked if i wanted to record in a friend's studio just for the hell of it. I fell in love. lol

What made you decide to starting YouTubing your musical talent?
Well at first it was just to promote my band, we were called "the fashion trends" hahah >.< but when i started doing solo videos it was just to show people my original songs..thats why i dont have many covers up on youtube.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Hmm this is a hard question because i am inspired by so many people/things. I dont look to other people and try to grab my sound off of them..if what im feeling at the time sounds similar to other artists, it just does. but i do look to some of my friends in the whole music community and admire their hard work to get where they are.

How does it feel to be getting all this support from people for doing what you do?
It feels amazing! i dont think that I am some sort of superstar or anything close to that..but the fact that even 1 person that doesnt know me listens to my music is just..wow. lol i get all weirded out in a good way. lol i love it though!

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
OH MAN lets go down the list?? hahah there are just so many people. I love to do things that i havent done before..i like to challenge myself. but i think my top three would be people like Lady GaGa, Passion, and maybe lil wayne and drake, just because it seems like theyre on everyone's tracks lately. lol ohh! and my friends Flow Ethics. They're boomb! haha

What has been your most popular cover on YouTube? Your most popular original song on YouTube?
My most popular cover has definitely been "Cardigan Weather" by Meg and Dia. When I was in my first band, thats covered almost all their songs so Im like pro at singing them now haha. I guess my most popular original is between "Wont stop this feeling" and "Intentions"..im not exactly too sure..i wrote them over a year apart so i guess thats accountable for the number of views. lol

How was the experience of being in the music video for Kris Mark's song "Who Is She"?
Hahahah! oh goodness. if i had two words to describe the whole thing, I'd say awkward and fun. Kris Mark is like a brother to me, I met him early on in my so-called "music career" and acting like im into him was just funny, not to mention that both his girlfriend and my boyfriend were there to watch us flirt with each other the whole time!

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
Lately, I've been playing a lot of Melissa Polinar and Jason Mraz and the soundtrack to "Fame" but i love anything upbeat and dance-able. I teach a hip-hop class to younger kids so i like to introduce them to new music..oh! and since i mostly listen to music in my car..its like my practice time..so i listen to stuff like whitney houston and tamia. I dont usually sing that kind of music, it's fun to get out of my comfort zone. and plus..its funny when people catch me..i'll start singing to them. lol

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
ahh i cant pick! i take a composition book around..so when even if i only think of one line..ill write it down..that or ill put it in my phone or something. i write anywhere and everywhere..unless im in the shower.. but im thinking of actually putting a white board at the opposite wall in my shower so i can write it down temporarily if i think of something..hah!

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
Definitely my best friend, Michael Cupino. Musically, he's like my boyfriend. even my real boyfriend knows that I'd choose mike over him..hahah It's like we have this connection. I make a melody and he just knows how i want it to sound. he's crazy! he's the reason why people love my music. Im just the image..its actually him singing..hahah jk jk. Mike and I met back in the 7th grade..he was in my cousin's band..and later on..he was in the my band. We fell in love there..hahah he'd probably feel all weird reading this and hit me or something. lol he's abusive like that. lol JK!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not playing music?
HM..well i dance...i try to dance a lot. its my only form of exercise now that im not in high school and stopped doing cheer. lol..i have a huge shopping problem. if my parents took stopped paying for everything and kicked me out..i'd probably be living in a box looking really cute. haha! I spend a lot of time with my 5-year-old brother too so I play mommy a lot..it's funny how people look at me when im with him. lol

What do you hope to accomplish while being involved in music?
Im not looking for fame or fortune..music is just my way of expressing myself. I used to be really depressed and i found that voicing my opinion through music is just so much healthier and it always makes me feel good. I guess all i can say is that i hope i give that same feeling to people..whether they listen to the lyrics and totally understand what i meant..or just get them to tap their toes or bob their heads..i just want them to enjoy! lol

Do you have any final words for the readers?
Hmm well I all i'd want to do is to encourage everyone to do what they love to do. Dont deprive the rest of the world of your talents because you never know who you can inspire. Oh and thank you to everyone who has listened to my music and has supported me, even if it was the slightest bit! the smallest action of support is still support and i am VERY appreciative. =)

And there you go. Merci beaucoup to Rae for the interview, and until next time, stay tuned!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH ELLEN KIM

Yee man, what's up? New interview with my girl from The Lost Kids, Ellen Kim! Check it out!

Ellen Kim (born April 24, 1985 in San Francisco, California) is a dancer/b-girl, most notably a part of The Lost Kids dance crew, NeverLand, and formerely with Funkanometry SF. As both a dancer and choreo teacher, she spends a lot of time developing new choreo and showing it to many classes she teaches around the world. She and The Lost Kids also audition for the current season of America's Best Dance Crew. She is currently in Germany, just having left London; she spared a few moments to answer some questions, so check it out!

How long have you been dancing for?
10 years

What style(s) of dance do you specialize in?
New style hip-hop, bit of jazz and modern

Your current dance crew is The Lost Kids, although you are involved with Neverland and Funkanometry SF in the past. How did you hookup with TLK originally?
Kyle Hanagami and I met in Funkanometry and I at that time of our lives...we wanted to move on :) We were asked to do World of Dance with Supreme Soul and so we called up some of our old friends!! We got together and decided on the name The Lost Kids because we all loved the movie Peter Pan and Hook!! Also, we were all lost kids at heart.

TLK also auditioned for season 4 of America's Best Dance Crew but didn't make it in. How was your first reaction, and is there hope for TLK to re-audition for the show later on?
Auditioning for ABDC Season 4 was a fun experience! We saw a lot of our friends, also, met really cool dancers and casts!! When we got the news, TLK were sad and disappointed BUT we didn't really mind only because we did it for fun anyways :) We just enjoyed the whole day and audition together as a team.

Are you working on any big projects or events right now, either by yourself or with TLK?
TLK have been busy with their lives (traveling and teaching on our own) and also concentrating more on NeverLand!! Their debut will be in Boston in November...so look out for them!! We invited a lot of our friends to join and perform in Boston. Check out our newest dancers in NeverLand...they are truly amazing!! Unfortunately, I won't be able to perform with NeverLand in November :( I have been in London for the past two weeks teaching and judging. I am currently in Germany right with Soreal Cru!! We are here for my friend's competition called The Soulplex Competition in Hannover, Germany. Then I will be on my way to Norway and Italy to teach.

What is your training schedule like?
Once I get back to the states, I will be moving to........secret. My first day working as a teacher in Studio 429 will be on December 3rd '09...so come!!

Who are your favorite dancers?
The Lost Kids and NeverLand - plus Mariel Martin, Jun Quemado, Keone Madrid, Lyle Beniga, April Rodriguez, Caramel in Boy Blue (London), Kristen Aguinaldo, Tracy Steller, Phillip Geniza, Dominic Byrd, Tessandra Chavez, Mia Michaels and Luam.

Who are your closest dance crew buddies?
TLK, Mariel Martin and Adela Vanikova

Which are some of your favorite dance moves/choreo of all time?
Mannn...that's too hard!! I love all kinds and forms of dancing!! BUT MY ULTIMATE INSPIRATION is Nick Wilson "Pump That Bass" back in 2006. The sickest piece EVER.

You went to Australia this year to teach some workshops. How was that experience?
The experience was definitely crazy!! I've always wanted to go to Sydney, Australia MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE!! When Kyle told me that we were going, I started crying!!! I was really excited and thankful that Kyle hooked me up with that job :) Thank you Kyle Hanagami!

What do you do in your spare time when not doing classes or practicing?
I love to spend time with myself when I'm not traveling. I go to the gym a lot and I try to read my books!! I'm reading Malcolm X right now....very sad and inspiring at the same time. Being in touch with yourself is the best way to get through life....trust me!

What is your current obsession at the moment, and it can be anything!
Sinagang. heehee... Food is always my obsession!!

Name one or more experiences that helped to shape you as both a person and a dancer, and briefly tell why they helped.
All my experiences that I have been through even til this day.My childhood wasn't so great, so when I found dance, I went for it. It definitely helped me get over my childhood memories. This is why I take dancing so serious. I don't do it so I can try to impress anyone, I do it truly because it brings me to a place that no or thing can hurt me. Teaching my choreography is a plus :)

When are you happiest the most?
In church or teaching!

Do you have any advice for people who want to pursue dancing?
DREAM BIG. DON'T GIVE UP. TRAIN IN ALL FORMS OF DANCE AND BE OPEN MINDED

And finally, after everything you’ve accomplished or done, is there one thing you haven’t done yet that you want to accomplish, something very important, very ‘epic’ as I phrase things like that, what would it be?
I want to have my own boutique one day. Also become a fashion designer!

Do you have any final words for the readers?
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING ME AND TLK!! Can't even express to everyone how much it motivates me. You guys are letting me live my ultimate dream...to teach and meet amazing people. I LOVE YOU GUYS <3

Brraaaapppp. That's a wrap (no pun intended). Thank you to Ellen for this interview, and thank you guys for reading, and until next time, I'm out, chyeah!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH LANA MCKISSACK

Double whammy for October 21st, enter Lana McKissack!

Lana McKissack (born June 5, 1984 in Los Angeles, California) is a Cali-based YouTube musician. Apart from an impressive resume already, she's a graduate of UCLA's Ray Bolger Musical Theater Program, she is a actress/singer/songwriter who is currently unsigned, but was with Sony Music Japan when she was younger, she performed at the Sydney Opera House for the 2000 Olympics, and more recently, most people these days will recognize her as the girl in the music video for David Choi's hit song "Won't Even Start". She answered a few questions I had for her, so enjoy!

How long have you been doing music for? Are you doing it professionally or independently?
I have been singing since I was 2 years old. I signed a recording contract with Sony Records in Japan when I was 15, then moved to an independent label called Harlem Records a few years later. I'm a free agent now.

What style of music do you generally play?
I sing pop, R&B, jazz and musical theater. When no one is listening, I also rap.

How did you first get involved in music?
My parents put me in singing, acting and dancing classes when I was a little kid. I fell in love with it right away. I learned guitar and piano, but I HATED practicing so I never really advanced in those areas. I'm re-teaching myself now. =)

What made you decide to starting YouTubing your musical talent?
My friend Chester and I made a video together and he suggested that I start a channel of my own. It has served as a great creative outlet for me when I am feeling overwhelmed by life.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Mariah Carey is biggest musical influence. I have loved her from day one. I have every song she has ever released. Don't tell anyone.

How does it feel to be getting all this support from people for doing what you do?
Terrible. I hate support. Just kidding. It feels great! I haven't been actively seeking subscribers. I just enjoy making videos and people seem to be enjoying watching them.

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
Have I mentioned that I love Mariah Carey?

What has been your most popular cover on YouTube? Your most popular original song on YouTube?
My Umbrella cover is my most viewed video, but that may be because people are confused by the caption of the girl holding an umbrella inside her room with a fan blowing in her face.
In Your Arms is my most popular original. People keep asking when I'm going to make an official recording of that song. The answer is...as soon as possible. I just haven't had the time yet. I apologize for my procrastination.

I heard you were on the Sony Music Japan label. How was that experience?
It was a great learning experience. I felt a little like a piece of meat at the time, but looking back I was very lucky to have released songs and gone on tour. I wouldn't suggest that lifestyle to anyone under the age of 18, but it'd be fun now that I'm older and wiser. Chester and I were talking about going on a European tour together. That'd be great too.

I saw you in the music video for David Choi's song "Won't Even Start". Tell me about that experience.
We had a blast! I met David through Chester. One day, he called me and asked if I'd like to be in his first music video. I said no, but he wouldn't leave me alone. That's a lie. I was thrilled! He's such a talented singer and songwriter. I'm so happy that his career is taking off. And the Wong Fu boys are amazing. They were very professional, and so much fun to work with.

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
I listen to a lot of music made by my insanely gifted friends: Chester See, David Choi, Andy Lange, Sonos. I love Coldplay, The Streets, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Fergie, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Sara Bareilles, Paramore and Mariah. There is also an embarrassingly large portion of my iPod devoted to musical theater.

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
Hm...there's not really a place I go. In fact, when I think of video concepts or lyrics, I'm usually in the middle of doing something else and my sudden bursts of inspiration are incredibly inconvenient.

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
Chester. We met in college. We also used to live 30 seconds from each other. He's a very talented and motivated guy, and a great friend. More importantly, he has amazing abs.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not playing music?
I am actually spending most of my time working on my acting career at the moment. When I'm not doing that, I like to have jam sessions with friends, play pranks on people, and watch The Office.

What do you hope to accomplish while being involved in music?
I hope to keep learning, evolving and finding new styles of music to get excited about. I don't ever want to get to the point where singing isn't fun for me anymore. That's kind of what happened in Japan, so I removed myself from that situation. I'm a much happier person now. =)

Do you have any final words for the readers?
Thank you all for your support and kind words. (Most of) your messages and comments are very touching and much appreciated.

Voila...another awesome blurb from another awesome artist; thank you to Lana for doing the interview. Until next time, expect some huge interviews along the way - ciao!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH ESNA YOON

Hey guys, what's up? New interview with YouTubing musician Esna Yoon, enjoy!

Esna Yoon (born Esther Yoon on November 7, 1987) is a California-based YouTube musician. She has garnered much attention for her soulful voice, her dancing skills and her impressive songwriting skills. As a UCLA alumni, she got a degree in Ethnomusicology with a concentration in Jazz Voice. Also, she was just recently inducted as a AFTRA member (for all you actors out there, you probably know what this is). With a busy schedule in hand, she wrote me back recently on this interview and it's now here for viewing!

How long have you been doing music for? Are you doing it professionally or independently?
I've been singing since I was 4. I played piano for about 6 years altogether. I'm pursuing the music industry professionally but I guess I'm independent right now.

What style of music do you generally play?
My music can be soul, folk, R&B, or Jazz or sometimes they're just all mixed together so it's hard to put a genre on my music.

How did you first get involved in music?
I always loved it. I never had an interest in anything else other than performing arts.

What made you decide to starting YouTubing your musical talent?
I realized I needed an outlet to share my music and needed people who will support my music and Youtube was a good option.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Anita O'day, Ella Fitzgerald, Beyonce, Celine Dion, Corinne Bailey Rae, Adele.

How does it feel to be getting all this support from people for doing what you do?
I can't be more thankful. I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for all the support people give me.

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
I would love to do collaborations with anyone who's willing to do them with haha. But I think at this point they're already so good and established I have a lot of catching up to do before other people would consider doing collaborations with me.

What has been your most popular cover on YouTube? Your most popular original song on YouTube?
My most popular cover??? I think right now is 'Poker Face'...maybe 'Gentlemen don't' by Gabe Bondoc

What was your inspiration behind the "Catch Esna Project"?
Nothing inspired me...I'm just wild. I just started jumping on people at this one rehearsal haha.

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
You know, ironically I don't listen to a lot of music. I rarely listen to any music.

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
It's just usually in my house. I'll wake up sometimes not being able to sleep and write on my bed or just sit in front of my friend piano and clunk out notes.

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
I don't know!! I guess I could say out of all the youtube stars I'm most closest to AJ Rafael. We actually met through youtube. I covered the first song I ever heard of his "Those Lips" and he saw, commented, and we met up at his house to jam once and ever since then we just became good friends.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not playing music?
I'm also getting into acting so recently I've been doing some background work for TV shows like Flash Forward, Bones, NCIS and Three Rivers.

What do you hope to accomplish while being involved in music?
I just want to be able to help people through my music. I write all my music through experiences I've been through or experiences that my friends have been through. I hope that my music can bring peace to people and ultimately just be enjoyed by my audience.

Do you have any final words for the readers?
Thank you for taking the time to read this interview and listen/watch my videos on youtube. I'm always so humbled by every comment I get. I really wouldn't have the strength to carry out my dreams if people weren't supporting me. Thank you so much!

Whoop, there it is (lame I know! lol). Thank you to Esna for the interview, and until next time, saiyounara!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH SORA AN

Ayooooo. What's good? New interview for you guys today, with NYC-based rocker Sora An...please enjoy!

Sora An (born August 18, 1979 in Houston, Texas) is a Korean-American indie rock singer-songwriter based in New York City. As part of two bands (Girls Don't Cry, Hooray for Goodbye) and running her own solo act, Sora is an accomplished musician way beyond her years, and her daily life fuels the fire to write her music, she says. She has just gotten back into NYC, and before heading off again to Florida to open for the Vivian Girls, she spared some time to answer a few questions!

How long have you been doing music for? Are you doing it professionally or independently?
I have been playing off an on my whole life until recently in 2004 when i first joined an all girls pop-rock band Girls Don't Cry that was formed by 2 producers here in NYC. Before that i would play at random open mics and had a few shows i booked myself in Nyc. I am working towards this becoming a profession where i can make a fine income and continue doing what i was born to do...writing, playing, and performing! I have a band called Hooray For Goodbye (myspace.com/hoorayforgood
bye) and i play lead guitar in ....actuallly there's only one and its me:) I love my band and the woman i play with are such great souls and i feel really blessed to be a part of this musical excursion. I also do my own solo acts as Sora An (myspace.com/soraan) I write all the music and lyrics to my songs as well as record them. I use my Mac without a mic..you know that little whole on the top right corner...yeah that is what i use, and the drums loops so that i stay in perfect rhythm. It's hard for me to record with a click a beat symplifies that for me...doesn't make sense but i need the snare, top hat , and kick drum...you know it's like the heart, lungs, and breath...it works for me:) I have had a couple of friends record me with there nice programs and i am just doing as much as i can to keep myself moving forward and learning as i go. OF COURSE I WOULDN"T MIND IF SOMEONE WANTED TO WORK WITH ME IN A STUDIO SETTING;)

What style of music do you generally play?
Gosh that is kind of hard to answer...really my music ranges it can be punk pop, pop rock, to folkish alt rock to indie rock...my music defines me i dont' define my music...whatever comes out of me and depending where i am at in my life spiritually makes a huge impact on the outcome of my songs and lyrics.

How did you first get involved in music?
I grew up in Houston, Tx ...northwest Houston in a suburban area called Spring..church...my mom said when i was 3 i sang in front of the church some Gospel hyme song but i dont' remember that ....that was a LONG LONG time ago! LOL!! I used to hitthe bowls and cups with my chopsticks, and play on the piano. I felt so unenamored with the lifestlyes down in Tx that i would just play my dads guitar to fiddle around...and 5 minutes would turn into 5 hrs as the years went by. I was a binge playing guitar junkie...i would go years without picking up the guitar, and then out of nowhere i would pick it back up and play it everyday for hours for a month straight...then play here and there.

What made you decide to starting YouTubing your musical talent?
I didn't. My first You Tube exp was when the producers of Girls Don't Cry posted us up there. Then when i made my first music video my friend Roger who actually was in the video and also played bass on the song and added some nice spice to the song "Reciprocate" posted it. Then i posted it as well:)

Who are your biggest musical influences?
The Cure, Sunny Day Real Estate, Sigur Ros, Bjork, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Face to Face, Jane's Addiction, Elliot Smith etc...the list can go on...Church Praise and Worship Music, Piano concertos my mom made me listen too which i really appreciate now, and yes some country songs...i love it all!!

How does it feel to be getting all this support from people for doing what you do?
FANTASTIC...you know words can't really explain how it feels...gosh it's like when you find out that your crush has a crush on you...all gushy inside and i feel like my cheeks are about to crack because my smile is so wide like the great divide! I just really feel so blessed and grateful:)

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
Robert Smith:) I also want to play guitar with Madonna as well as Norah Jones:) Other than that there are so many great indie artists out there that i would love to collaborate with:)

What has been your most popular cover on YouTube? Your most popular original song on YouTube?
"Reciprocate"...it's the only song i have on YouTube.

Have you ever considered writing purely Korean music for your fans?
Oh absolutely...my father told me a few months ago that if i were to write a song in Korean or even half english half Korean they would go crazy and the market there is on top...you know us Asians we are really good at supporting music and artists:

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
Itunes shuffle...so it ranges from my own songs, MGMT, Coldplay, Jets To Brazil, Hooray For Goodbye, Ten Minute Turns, Paris Can Wait, Bjork, Cocteau Twins, Damien Rice, De La Soul, Norah Jones, Chopin Piano Concertos, Death Cab, The SHins, David Gray, Imogean Heap, Sonic Youth, The Cure, Mogwai....it goes on and on!

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
Anywhere as well as away from NYC...it could be a simple train ride upstate, but mainly nature/new city out of state:)

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
My closest musician friend is Liz Kelly of Paris Can Wait! She is off the hook! GENIUS!! Not only that she is a beautiful person inside and out and a great friend!! I met her when we got rid of our first drummer in Girls Don't Cry, and Liz came in and replaced her...and i still remember when i first saw her in her cute ponytail sitting at her drums:) She tore some shit up on that set and her voice oh her voice is so beautiful!!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not playing music?
Grocery store, and preparing foods and cooking some foods:)

What do you hope to accomplish while being involved in music?
Heal through the power of music:) Travel around the world and experience the people, places, things, culture, GOOD FOOD. The experiences that will conduct my creative symphonies to write more songs and collaborate with other brilliant musicians as well. Donations and supporting all the non-profit organizations my mother has been in since she was in her mid 20's. Spoil my family and friends:)

Do you have any final words for the readers?
I have a new music video coming soon for "Oh it's so nice" Stay tuned!

I’m not sure if you guys have done any collaboration work with other artist, but is there any chances of seeing that happen in the future?
YA I'M SURE THERE IS. WE JUST DID SOMETHING WITH KJ 52 AND I'M SURE THERE ARE MORE TO COME

Are you guys doing any projects and/or campaigning for anything right now aside from your music career?
YUP I AM DOING A NONPROFIT CALLED REVOLUTION ONE (REV1.ORG) AS WELL AS STARTING A POP/URBAN LABEL

How did you guys react when you found out that you won the award for Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year at last year’s Dove Awards?
WELL IT WAS DOPE, BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE JUST REALIZED THAT THERES STILL SO MUCH TO DO

This question is for Blanca. You recently announced that you got engaged. How does it feel? And do you think you can manage both the “married” life and your music career?
Blanca was unavailable to comment.

This question is for Pablo. How did you get that crazy hairstyle of yours?
Pablo was unavailable to comment.

This question is for Manwell. I know a lot of people ask this, but for those who don’t know, you have a lot of tattoos. What do they all mean?
ONE SAYS HOTEES WORLD (HO-T) AND ITS A NICKNAME I GOT IN BIBLE COLLEGE. THERES AN "M" ON MY LEFT HAND AND TWO ON MY BACK OF SUNS SYMBOLICALLY REPRESENTING THE SON OF GOD

Back to all of you now. Can you name any one moment in your life that defined who God wanted you to be, and how that desire came about to pursue music as a career?
WELL I GUESS IT WOULD BE THE FIRST TIME I WAS CALLED TO MUSIC. IT WAS PRETTY EVIDENT THAT GOD WANTED ME TO DO THIS

What’s the one thing that God is constantly reminding you of or challenging you each to live out in your daily lives?
FOR ME TO BE A MAN OF CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY. WHERE I WANT TO GO REQUIRES A HUGE DEAL OF CHARACTER

You guys have probably played a lot of gigs by now. What has been your favorite gig by far, and why?
I'VE HAD A LOT OF FAVORITE. PROBABLY AMSTERDAM CAUSE IT WAS WITH THE BAND AND WE GOT TO TRAVEL. AUSTRALIA WAS COOL TOO.

Is there anywhere you haven’t played in yet that you’d like to?
YUP! ASIA!!

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
JOHN MAYER, NE YO, ASCENSION, THE SCRIPT, WORSHIP MUSIC

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
THE STUDIO

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not recording or touring?
GYM AND MOVIES BABY! THE BEST

To the critical question now. You guys have been involved in music for some time now, and music tastes and styles are changing quickly in this day and age. Where do you see music in the US/Canada going in the future, in the sense of changing tastes, and will this allow you continued creativity down the road?
WELL TO BE HONEST THERES NO TELLING WHERE MUSICS GOING..I FEEL WE'RE DEFINITELY GOING BACK TO A "SINGLE" SOCIETY LIKE IN THE OLD RECORD DAYS, BUT THATS COOL. AS LONG AS WE CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE MUSIC, THE WORLD IS GOING TO REMAIN INSPIRED REGARDLESS THE MEDIUM IN WHICH ITS PRESENTED

Do you feel you’ve contributed to the advancement of music in the US & Canada as a Christian hip-hop unit? And is there anything you’d like to see done in this whole genre of music in the US/Canada?
SURE...BUT THERE'S STILL SO MUCH WORK TO BE DONE. I'D LOVE TO SEE OUR INDUSTRY EMBRACE URBAN POP A LOT MORE

There you go, G1C in a nutshell, thanks to Manwell for this interview, and until next time, au revoir!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH YouTube MUSICIANS - EDELEN ANGELES

Yo! Been a while since I posted an interview with a musicians...but this interview was long overdue to be posted...so here it is, my chat with Edelen Angeles!

Edelen Angeles (born October 17, 1989 in Chula Vista, California) is a Cali-based YouTube acoustic musician who got attention with her songs like "Smile" and "Catch of My Day". She isn't as active these days, but she spoke with me a few weeks ago in mid-September to chat about what's up with her!

How long have you been doing music for? Are you doing it professionally or independently?
I've been writing since i was like...12? But got pretty serious when i was around 16 or 17. I kinda just do it independently - when I was on YouTube and all that I had a couple offers to have my songs used for a couple indie films but i always lagged on getting them a sample haha.

What style of music do you generally play?
Lots of acoustic. Stuff from the heart.

How did you first get involved in music?
My dad played music his whole life, so I guess it's in the genes, kinda?

What made you decide to starting YouTubing your musical talent?
I kinda just wanted to see if people could relate, whether they were feeling happy or sad (unfortunately I found more people could relate to my sad songs haha) and even if they could relate to my sad stuff more, at least they could be sad and not alone.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
The beatles, prettyman, branch, mraz, mayer, some city in colour, you know, kids who can pick up a guitar and write their own stuff.

How does it feel to be getting all this support from people for doing what you do?
It felt pretty cool, I always thought my stuff was shit but people on youtube seem to think otherwise.

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
I'd kind of like to sing with my good friend jeffery vanwinkle. jason mraz would be pretty sick too.

What has been your most popular cover on YouTube? Your most popular original song on YouTube?
hahah I did a cover of 'better together' that got like 15,000 views. my most popular original song probably has to be Catch of my Day, or Smile.

Can fans expect another cover or original song from you soon?
hahah yeah man i've got tons of new stuff. im kind of trying to stray away from covers, but songs are so damn catchy i can't really help but wanna learn them. haha but yeah ive got some new stuff on the way, i just need to find myself a camera or something :]

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
I dig a lot of classic rock. a lot of paul and lennon. i like a lot of hardcore and the occasional african beats.

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
Anywhere i'm alone. like a garage or a closet haha

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
I'd probably have to say all the boys in Macguyver. they're a local San Diego band that'll make it big real soon. I met them in college, a great band of boys. I love you guys!!

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not playing music?
Shower, collect sponges.

What do you hope to accomplish while being involved in music?
Music is everyone's soundtrack, I just want to write something and have it able to take you some place nice, or some place not so nice. as long as it makes people feel something, feel human, then that in itself is a huge accomplishment for me.

Waah, there it is peeps. Those are some inspiring words from Edelen, muchas gracias to her for this interview, and thanks for reading. Till next, cheers!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH LYDIA PAEK

Guess what! A double feature for Sept. 11/09! Let's see what's up with Quest Crew/Boxcuttuhz member Lydia Paek!

Lydia Paek (born March 28, 1990 in Los Angeles, California) is a member of dance crews Quest Crew and Boxcuttuhz. She is also a singer, and she has made quite a name for herself. From a young age she showed much potential as both a dancer and a singer, and has gone through many challenges so far to get where she is today. But with every struggle, she says, God is there too. She just recently hosted ISA 2009 in San Gabriel alongside Tom Ngo, and she keeps busy with practices with both dance crews as well as other gigs. Now take a look as we find out who Lydia Paek really is!

How long have you been dancing for?
5 years

What style(s) of dance do you specialize in?
Breaking, funk, choreo.

Your primary dance crew is Quest Crew. How did you hookup with them originally?
I sessioned with them a long time ago, and I became friends with then, they wanted me in because of my potential, not cause I was good. Cause I was not good a long time ago haha.

You’re also a member of Boxcuttuhz, which you joined during your time in ABDC season 3. How are things going with you guys after ABDC?
They are good, just doing our own things, shows here and there, traveling, training, and sessioning.

Are you working on any big projects or events right now, either by yourself, with Quest, or with Boxcuttuhz?
Just training more with both crews and my own music.

What is your training schedule like?
Random ahah

Who are your favorite dancers?
I have a lot - Yoshie, narumi, shi chen, sean evaristo, lando wilkins, alottttttt...I can go on forever.

Who are your closest dance crew buddies?
TM, Quest, Common Ground, Fanny Pack, RingMasters, KabaModern, and more :)

Aside from dance, you also sing. How long have you done that for?
Umm I actually started dancing first then singing lol, since I was in jr high.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
stevie wonder, luther, india arie, lauryn hill, maxwell, kim burell, smokie norful...etc.

In several of your YouTube videos, you’ve been seen playing alongside guitarist Aj Rafael. How did you two meet?
Through Randolf Permejo, basically mutual friends.

Would you ever consider doing a career in music aside from your dancing, and why or why not?
Yes I think singing comes with dancing.

What do you do in your spare time when not playing shows or practicing?
cook, draw, hangout, sew, make music, write, workout.

What is your current obsession at the moment, and it can be anything!
Hello Kitty and Dove chocolate hahaha.

“I talk with a melody and walk by beats” is your motto. How did you come up with it?
I don't know, I write a lot so I was on a roll with this one spoken word I did, it just came out, I made it up and I stay true to it.

When are you happiest the most?
When someone around me is playing music.

What is your favorite Bible verse, and why?
Mark ch. 11 verse 23 and on, because it gives me strength and security.

Do you have any advice for people who want to pursue either dancing or singing?
No matter what, never let anyone down you for what you love to do, it might be hard and I won't lie, its gonna be a struggle but your gonna enjoy it at the same time. If you pursue it make sure you put your heart into it cause anything to do with music comes from the soul, you make your own story to tell through dancing and singing.

And finally, after everything you’ve accomplished or done, is there one thing you haven’t done yet that you want to accomplish, something very important, very ‘epic’ as I phrase things like that, what would it be?
Ummm, be on a TV show like acting I guess even if i suck at it, make an album, make my own line of clothes, lol I have a lot more to accomplish and achieve, we'll see where I am in about 10 years ahaha.

And there you have it! Thanks to Lydia for the interview, and saiyonara for now!

rhythm.connection presents A MOMENT WITH YouTube MUSICIANS - ALFA GARCIA

Waaassssuuuupppp? (I know, lame sauce.) Me again, with another part in the YT musician segment, and I'm joined by NYC-based singer/songwriter Alfa Garcia, voila!

Alfa Garcia (born October 11, 1985 in the Philippines) is a singer-songwriter from North Jersey/NYC. Born and raised in a family of classically-trained musicians, Alfa is far more than that. Apart from having taught herself to play guitar 10 years ago, and also able to play the piano and the violin, she's got quite a voice, and has traveled to many big cities in North America to do her thing. She's got a lot of heart and soul for being a young musician, and now continues to share her passion with others!

How long have you been doing music for? Are you doing it professionally or independently?
I've been involved with music since I was 5, so basically my whole life. I started off playing classical violin and piano and eventually branched out and started writing my own material. I'm doing it independently and hope to become "professional" - i.e. do it as a job.

What style of music do you generally play?
I always dread this question! :) It's hard to say, and a little misleading to "brand" the style. I really started writing music because I just wanted to express thoughts and melodies that I had, never aiming to be any kind of sound. But I guess if people really wanted a classification, I'd go with pop/rock/acoustic/folk. That's the best I can do. :)

How did you first get involved in music?
My mom plopped me down on a piano bench and introduced me to my piano teacher when I was 5 years old. That really started the snowball into other instruments and eventually, songwriting. I'm thankful for it! :) But I come from a family of musicians, so it’s always been a part of my life.

What made you decide to starting YouTubing your musical talent?
- I really didn’t start doing it myself. It started when people posted my performances on their YouTube pages. Truthfully, I'm kind of old-fashioned in that I think nothing beats the live experience, and I'm most interested in improving the live show. But seeing how cool it was for people to think my performances were worthy of posting online, I realized it would be a good way for me to get my songs heard too. I am not as active on YouTube as I can be, but it’s DEFINITELY something I hope to change in the coming months, so stay tuned, k? :)

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Biggest? Hm, so hard to say! When I was younger, I got a lot of motivation from my grandfather. He’s got a knack for playing piano by ear – to this day, he’s still better than me at it. So he was probably one of the earliest influences to writing music, and trying out a non-classical style. When I started listening to popular music, I got very much into a grunge band called silverchair. They didn’t have much popularity in the States but were huge in Australia. Funny enough, the lead singer’s writing style really spoke to me back in the day despite the fact that his sound was so different from what I sound like. But like I said, I never intended to “sound” a certain way, and I think his sense of songwriting was what I picked up on and it motivated me to write introspectively. Later on I picked up a lot from Jewel’s earlier career and Fiona Apple. Now I kind of feel influenced by so many female singer-songwriters: Joni Mitchell, Billie Holiday, Regina Spektor, Sara Bereilles, Feist, etc. and also a lot of bands: Death Cab for Cutie, Stars, the Beatles.

How does it feel to be getting all this support from people for doing what you do?
I am honored and humbled at the same time! And it definitely pushes me to keep on becoming the best songwriter and performer I can be.

Is there ANY musician that you would like to do a collaboration with in the future?
I’d love to collaborate with any of the artists that just did Kollaboration Acoustic 3. I think they’re all excellent and I can learn a lot from each of them.

What has been your most popular cover on YouTube? Your most popular original song on YouTube?
Most popular cover is Feist’s “1,2,3,4.” I don’t do a lot of covers to begin with, and this was my only foray into covering songs on YouTube. It’s stunning to see how many hits a cover will get you. My most popular original song? I don’t really know that. The new album just came out, so I guess those songs haven’t been able to get as much face-time yet, per se, so we’ll see what happens. Of the older bunch, maybe songs like “The Lament” and “Better” were somewhat popular.

How did it feel to win Kollaboration Acoustic 3? And how was the event overall?
It was pretty shocking. I came into the event just hoping to sell a few CD’s and get some more people tuned into my music. I never imagined I would actually win. It was pretty much the “icing” on the cake, though. Just being there and connecting with all those artists for an entire day was more than enough for me.

I imagine you have a lot of music tastes; what do you normally play on your iPod and/or when you’re at home?
It totally depends on my mood. If you look at my iPod, you’ll probably scratch your head. I’ll listen to everything from Cypress Hill to Sara Bareilles to Devendra Banhart to Paramore to French rap. Go figure. :) Recently, I’ve been listening to Camille – my favorite French singer. Her first album is pretty low-production and a bit grittier than her second, but it’s got a great acoustic feel and her lyrics are really quirky.

Where’s the one place where you can go and get your creative flow going in order to write/create music?
Hm, my room.

Who is your closest musician friend, and how did you two meet?
This question’s a bit hard…having grown up with music I feel like a lot of people I’ve known through the years are musicians. The closest… definitely my sister. She plays flute and piano and was trained in classical singing.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not playing music?
I have a day job, sadly. I’m a writer for a newspaper… aside from working and music, I try to travel whenever I can and I just enjoy hanging out with friends in the city (NYC).

What do you hope to accomplish while being involved in music?
I just hope my music has a positive impact on people. Whether they’re inspired to do music too, or if they can feel connected because of my lyrics, that’s really the best reward for me.

Do you have any final words for the readers?
Thanks for reading! Hope to meet you soon.

Huzzah! There it is folks! Thank you to Alfa for the interview, and I hope you guys enjoyed this as much as I did. Till next time, adios!
